Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative and Science News

I am thrilled beyond words that one of the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiatives funding of reasearch grants, this one at Cornell University, has contributed to reasearch discoveries in breaking through the blood-brain-flow barrier! This is amazingly promising!

My blog header consists of several of the 75 small format art quilts (among thousands of quilters) that I personally donated for auction by our amazing founder, leader, quilter, and quilt creator Ami Simms from our raising of over One Million Dollars earned by their sales from 2006-2013. 

Amazing, amazing work and kudos to all involved at every level of funding and this research and discovery at Cornell University!

And for all of you who joined my two internet groups and made and donated 600  8" x 11 " small format art quilts for sale by AAQI, thank you and bless you!

"The team has identified approximately 20 drugs, many of them already FDA approved for human use, that have potential in dementia therapy and are screening these drugs in Alzheimer's mice now.

Schaffer said he's "super-optimistic" that, if the same capillary-blocking mechanism is at play in humans as it is in mice, this line of research "could be a complete game-changer for people with Alzheimer's disease." This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation, the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, and the Brightfocus Foundation."

Michele Bilyeu's AAQI Quilting Challenge has now officially ended due to the closing of AAQI and our reaching and surpassing our goal of earning $1,000,000 for Alzheimer's Disease Research!!!!  Thank you for continuing to write me and offer your support. And bless your heart if you JUST wrote me and wanted to make quilts for our group because your loved one was just diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease!!!

My Liberated Quilting Challenge ran from 2010 up until December 2013. With our quilts being donated right up until the deadline of August 1, 2013. It was an amazing run by less than 3 dozen quilters in this AAQI Group Challenge creating somewhere between 600 and 650 quilts! Amazing!!!!!

Members of the Liberated Quilting Challenge group share a common goal of exploring new ways of incorporating creative quilting into our own unique styles. Quilts can be free-pieced, strip-pieced, fused, embroidered, or appliqued, or use any other expression or artistic elements as long as they are within the durability, handling, and storage requirements of AAQI. We seek to provide an opportunity for members to learn from one another through our blogs, message boards and web links, and to think in a liberated and "outside of the box" artistic format.

Information and directions for making an AAQI quilt for our group can be found at Liberated Challenge Group Instructions on our updated Liberated Quilting Challenge Blog. This site will also showcase individual quilts and quilters and update members on the latest news provided by the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative including the latest news on research funding, exhibits, and traveling quilt shows.

It is no longer possible to donate a Priority: Alzheimer's Quilt. Between January 2006 and August 2013 the AAQI has received more than 15,600 donated quilts. We commend the quilters who threaded their needles to make funding Alzheimer's research a priority in their lives.
